A horse of brilliant speed, Saffron Tartan won the Gold Cup in 1961; the previous year he had won the King George VI Chase. His dam, Kellsboro Witch, from estimable jumping lines, won just once, due to her temperament. His sire,Tartan used as a jumper sire in Ireland, also got the 1954 Champion Steeplechaser in England, Royal Tan, who won the Grand National in 1954 and placed second in that race and in the Irish Grand National the previous year. Tartan got some other good chasers and hurdlers, including Barberstown Prince (Galway Hurdle) and Highland Lad (2nd Irish Grand National), and is in the female line of a recent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, See More Business. Grandsire Ellangowan won the 2000 Guineas and Newmarket Champion Stakes, among other races. |
