Beloved national hero Red Rum won three Grand Nationals and placed second twice between 1973 and 1977. Son of Sussex Stakes winner Quorum and Mared, who won at 7 lengths on the flat, he began his career winning his maiden race at 2, the 5 furlong Thursby Plate. Sold in 1972 to Noel Le Mare, who owned him during his amazing and courageous victories at Aintree. "Rummy," who died in 1995, age 30, is buried adjacent to the winning post at Aintree.
