British-bred Ninepins won his first American Grand National at age 5; he came back to win it again seven years later, at age 12, crossing the finish line 22 lengths ahead of the second horse. His second National win was his first of the year, and was completed in bog-like conditions, similar to those he faced when he won in 1992. With other victories, such as the NY Turf Writers Cup Handicap, Ninepins won over $400,000. His sire, the stakes-winning stayer Niniski (Ormonde Stakes, Irish St. Leger, and others), also liked soft going. His dam descended from Prince Chevalier and Arctic Star, both of whom are seen in the pedigrees of top 'chasers and show jumpers. |
