| Irish-born Little Owl was chasing-bred, by the jumping sire Cantab, who also got the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner The Thinker and the Grand National winner Little Polveir. Little Owl won all but one of his races over fences prior to his 1981 Gold Cup race, which had the best field in a decade, including a previous Gold Cup winner, a champion hurdler, and other top horses. Owned by brothers Jim and Robert Wilson, and ridden by his amateur owner Jim, only the third amateur to ever win the race. |
