Katko

As adored in France as Arkle was in Great Britain, French-bred Katko won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in three successive years. In his six years over fences he won 20 races, including the Prix Ingre twice. Grandsire Devon was a moderate racehorse who won the Prix Greffulhe and the Prix de Chantilly at 3; as a sire he got "many useful animals, both on the flat and over fences, " including son Fondeur, the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner of 1980. In addition to getting Katko, son Camarthen sired another Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner, Piomares. Another grandson of Devon's, the Selle-Francais Ucello III, won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris twice in the early 1990s. Bred by the Comte de Montesson, who also bred the 2001 Grand Steeple winner, Kotkijet, from Katko's dam, Kotkie.
