Cure-All was a half-bred brown gelding, described as "a stocky, short-legged, compact horse." Bred in Yorkshire, he was purchased at the hunter sales venue, Horncastle Fair, by Healing, Lincolnshire farmer Walter Loft. He was lame when purchased, and was rehabilitated by Loft and his groom, Kitty Crisp, after which he was used as a hunter with the Brocklesby Hunt, and then was entered in a steeplechase, in which he ran second. Under the jockeyship of his owner, Cure-All won the Grand National of 1845, a race postponed due to frost until the early evening. He was feted in Healing after his big win, and never ran in a steeplechase again. His sire, Physician, was a pretty good stayer in England, by Chester Cup winner Brutandorf (who sired 1842 National winner Gaylad). Another Physician son, The Cure, sired Lambton, a good steeplechaser, and Jealousy, a mare who won the Grand National in 1861. |
