Cottesmore was a big, rangy horse who began the 1940 steeplechase season by losing by twenty lengths in the Jervis Spencer Steeplechase Handicap. Purchased after that by amateur rider, trainer and polo player George H. Bostwick, he went on to a series of victories that year, including the Meadow Brook Steeplechase, the American Grand National (carrying top weight of 160 pounds), and the Temple Gwathmey Memorial--his six wins and one second placing from eight starts earned him the steeplechase "Horse of the Year" title. In 1942 he won the American Grand National a second time. His sire, Heverswood, was a moderately good sprinter in England. |
