A non-winner on the flat, the American-bred Bushranger later blossomed as a 'chaser, and at age 5 won a 1-1/2 mile flat race at the United Hunt Meet (the Whitney Gold Cup). His best year, 1936, was also his last, winning several top races, culminating with the American Grand National, where he carried the then record weight of 172 pounds. He died in the spring of 1937, when he plowed through the second fence of a training run at Belmont Park, breaking his neck. |
