Popular French steeplechase champion, "the steeplechaser of the century," Al Capone II won 24 races between 1992 and 1999; tough and consistent, he ran until the age of 12. He liked the 5500 meter course at Auteuil, and won the Prix la Haye Jousselin a record six consecutive years. In 1997 he also won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. Bred by J. Cypres and L. Couetil by the Selle Francais jumping sire, Italic, and out of L'Oranaise, a successful cross proven earlier with his full brother, The Fellow (1985), who won the King George VI Steeplechase (twice), the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in 1991, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1994. |
