CHILDWICK BURY STUD was established in 1888 by Sir J. Blundell Maple. In 1908, J.B. Joel assumed ownership of the then 2,000 acre establishment, where stallions were left to run free all day in enormous paddocks and in all weather--"they look more like pigs than horses," one visitor claimed.

The stud was home to SUNSTAR, SUNDRIDGE (sire of SUNSTAR), PRINCE PALATINE (before his export to the U.S.), and such famous mares as OUR LASSIE, JEST, DORIS, ABSURDITY, GLASS DOLL, and many other good producers. --P.E.
