Troytown was another dual winner of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and the Grand National. The 17 hand Irish-bred gelding with a powerful front-end won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in 1919; the following year he won the Grand National in driving rain, punching a hole in the fourth fence from home, an open ditch, by taking off too soon. Shipped back to France to compete again at Auteil, he finished third. A few days later he ran in another race over the same course, and broke his leg above his knee and had to be put down, age 7. Troytown was by Zria, who got a number of good steeplechasers (he was by the great staying sire, Cyllene); Troytown's dam was by the top steeplechase sire, Ascetic. |
