Trapezio

In 1970 the National Studs, one of the most interesting and successful studs in Italy in the second half of the twentieth century, acquired Trilogia by the good Italian racehorse and leading sire Toulouse Lautrec, out of Tofanina, who came from good staying blood. Trilogia was in foal to Bazin, a good jumper who won the Premi Noviziato and other races, but an unsuccessful flat racing sire, who had been used at stud primarily for his pedigree; he was by the genuine racehorse Worden II (leading sire in France) and out of the top Italian three year-old, Barbara Sirani (By Verso II). Bazin was eventually exported to France in 1972 and served as a National Stud sire there. The 1971 "ugly duckling" foal out of Trilogia, Trapezio, won 3 of his 9 races at age 2, and one at age 3, all on the flat in selling or claiming company. He was then sent to Robert Feligioni for jumper training, and began his transformation to "swan," according to some turf writers. In April of 1974 he won his first race over hurdles, the Premio Maia, followed by a third in the Spring Criterium, and in the fall season he won the Premio Generale Ayroldi di Robbiate and placed second in the Premio Guilio Berlingieri. At age 4 he won six of his seven starts, including the Premio Ezio Vanoni, the Premio Lainate and the Gran Premio Merano. The following year he won the Gran Premio Merano again, by five lengths, and four other top steeplechases, and at age 6 he won the Premio Giacomo Durini for the second time, as well as other races. In all, he won 24 races in 41 starts, most over obstacles, and won more than 153 million Italian Lire.
