Solitaire won the 1897 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. His sire, Fra Diavolo (1881, not to be confused with the later Fra Diavolo, influential in sporthorse breeding), was a good stayer, winner of the Grand Criterium, the Grand St. Leger de France, and the Le Coupe de Paris. His dam, Sauterelle, was a grand-daughter of the Melbourne grandson Ruy Blas, damsire of 1884 Grand Steeple winner Varaville. Solitaire was a full brother to Lausanne (1889), dam of 1909 Grand National winner Lutteur III. |
