Owned and ridden by Philadelphians, Sacandaga was the first "outside" horse to win the Maryland Hunt Cup, and he won it twice in 1909 and 1910; his owner, Frances Fell, married his jockey, Alfred Devereaux after the 1909 race. His first start over fences was in 1908, and in addition to winning the Maryland Hunt Cup, he won the Middlesex Hunt Cup in 1910; he also won the Rockaway Hunt Cup (now defunct), "when it was a real course." His nickname was "Old Sockadolager," no doubt because, due to his tendency to drag his hind legs into his fences, he raced in bandages. Sired by Royal Emblem, an imported son of Royal Hampton; the latter got winners on the flat and over fences, including the 1895 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner Styrax. His dam, La Tosca, had Melbourne blood in her female line, and was by a son of Hermit, who got the great jumping sire Ascetic. |
