Poethlyn

By winning the "War National" of 1918 at Gatwick, and the National, held back at Aintree in 1919, Poethlyn became one of the handful of horses to win successive Grand Nationals. In 1918 he beat the 1917 winner, Ballymacad; in his second win, carrying 12 st. 7 lb, and the favorite, he won by 8 lengths. He was by Rydal Head, a son of two-time leading sire in Great Britain, St. Frusquin; his dam, Fine Champagne, was by King Crow, a stallion from the half-bred mare family B-2.
