The grey Oracle II was considered the best timber horse of his day; he won two Maryland Hunt Cups, but had an unlucky fall in the 1925 race, which would have brought him his third win. Among his other top wins were the Maryland Grand National, the Meadow Brook Hunt cup, the New Jersey Hunt Cup and the Between the Flags Steeplechase. He was 16 hands, "a good weight-carrier, speedy and a bold and sure jumper." After retirement he continued as a sound hunting horse for some years. His sire, Oxford, descended from the speedy and nervous top sprinter Himyar; his dam line extended back through several generations of American-bred mares. |
