Miocamen

Miocamen was a very good flat runner, who won the Premio Guiseppe de Montel at 2, and at 3 won the Premio Earl Felice Scheibler and placed third in the Premio Merano. Shifted to jumping, under trainer Robert Pozzoli's guidance, he became a top chaser, winning the Gran Premio Merano twice, and placing in that race once; he also won the Turin Steeple Chase twice, the Roman Fence Great Race, the Premio Durini steeplechase twice, the Premio Lainate steeplechase twice, in all capturing 21 wins and 11 places between the ages of 4 and 8, winning almost 2 miliardo (milliardo=billion in Italian Lire). He retired to stud in Tuscany in 1996, and was later moved to Calabria. He was always crossed on half-bred mares, due to the decision not to admit any of his offspring into the Italian stud book. He died in 2001. Miocamen was bred by Guido Borghi, owner of Montalbano Race. Miocamen's dam, Miss Habit, a winner at three, was by Habitat, a source of brilliant speed. Her dam, London Bird, also produced Luci a San Siro (by the stout/professional Sassafras), a winner on the flat at ages 2 and 3, and even better over fences between ages 3 and 10. Borghi sent Miss Habit, with her speed pedigree, to top staying racehorses and sires in attempt to strengthen and balance her offspring. In 1985 she was sent to Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Ballymore (also sire of staying winner Seymour Hicks, in turn sire of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner See More Business) in England, producing the bay filly Mebetina, later a winner and placed in group 3 races. In 1986 Miss Habit was bred to two-time champion European stayer (1982, 1983), Ardross, producing Miocamen; she went on the next year to produce the winning filly California Breeze (by the great racehorse and source of stamina, Busted), later a dam of winners herself.
