Merano was bred by the brothers Giuseppe and Filippo Morese. He was ridden by Captain Raimondo d'Inzeo, who, with brother Piero, dominated Italian show jumping for years. In 1955 Merano and Raimondo d'Inzeo won the Silver medal at the World [jumping] Championship. To be accurate: Raimondo won the Silver medal. With 4 faults in the finals, Merano was the best horse of the championship by a long stretch. The following year, Merano and d'Inzeo won both individual and team Silver at the Stockholm Olympics. The same year, Raimondo was the World Champion. Merano's sire, Ugolino da Siena, was the Italian Derby winner in 1935; grandsire Ortello won a number of Italian classics and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Ugolino da Siena also got Posillipo, another great Olympic medal-winning show jumper for Captain d'Inzeo. |
