Irish-bred Manifesto, two-time winner of the Grand National, contested it eight times, placing third three times, in his last running placing eighth at the age of 16. In his second win in 1899 he carried top weight of 12 st. 7 lb. His sire, Man of War, traced back to Melbourne on his dam's side. Grandsire Ben Battle won the Irish Derby and was leading sire in Ireland: he got the 1900 Grand National winner Ambush II; the long-running stakes-winning stayer, Bendigo; and Silver Lady, the dam of 1906 National winner, Ascetic's Silver. |
