Jay Trump was a long-running, versatile steeplechaser, the third American-bred horse to win the Grand National, schooled for the event by the former top jockey, and later leading trainer, Fred Winter (who rode Mandarin in his broken-bit Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris win). Jay Trump also distinguished himself by winning the Maryland Hunt Cup three times, and the American Eastern Hunt "Triple Crown," which included the the Maryland Hunt Cup, Grand National Point-to-Point (Maryland) and My Lady's Manor race, all timber races, in 1964. He ran for two years, at ages 2 and 3, as a claimer in flat races, running third once in eight starts, before being purchased as a steeplechase prospect for Mary Stephenson. In eighteen races over jumps between the ages of 5 and 9, he won twelve and ran second in four. His sire, Tonga Prince, was a long-running handicap level horse who won 7 races in 42 starts, by the champion sprinter and good sire Polynesian. His dam Be Trump, was by Australian stakeswinner Bernborough, and had a sturdy American tail female line. |
