Gamecock was a popular chaser of the 1880s, game and tough throughout seven years, winning 28 races, including the 4 mile Grand International Steeplechase at Sandown and other tough races. He contested the Grand National seven times, winning in 1887, and placing third the year before--he did not finish the race twice. Bred in Ireland, he was the son of Revolver, who had run in the 1867 National; grandsire Artillery was a leading sire of steeplechasers in the '60s. Gamecock's dam, Lightfoot, was also a winner over fences. |
