The 17-hand, blaze-faced The Dikler jumped the Cheltenham Gold Cup in seven consecutive years, placing third twice, second once, in a closely contested race, and winning in 1973. A crowd-pleaser whom no one wanted as a unbroken, ugly three year-old, The Dikler's Gold Cup win was a thrilling race that proved his courage and staying power. His sire, Vulgan, was used almost exclusively for breeding jumpers, the leading jumper sire in Great Britain ten times between 1959 and 1974. Vulgan got three Grand National winners--Team Spirit, Foinavon, and Gay Trip--and two Irish Grand National winners, Vulpine and Colebridge. Vulgan's damsire was Motrico, the two-time winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, who also won over fences. Vulgan himself was damsire of two additional Grand National winners, Corbiere and West Tip.
