Cottage Rake

Born, bred, owned and trained in Ireland, the versatile and consistent gelding Cottage Rake was leading jumper sire Cottage's most brilliant son. His speed, jumping talent and courage brought him three successive victories in the Cheltenham Gold Cup (1948-1950), a win of the King George VI Steeplechase at Kempton Park (1949), and a number of other victories over fences, including, early in his career, the Maiden 'Chase at Fairyhouse, and the Emblem Chase at Manchester. He ran second in the 1949 Irish Grand National, giving away 3 stone in weight to the winner. Known for his closing speed, he was also a decent flat racer, winning a handicap over a mile and a half at Naas in 1946, and the Irish Cesarewitch at The Curragh in 1947. Cottage Rake's dam, Hartingo, had the jumper sire Zria (sire of 1920 Grand National winner Troytown), and the great 'chasing broodmare Mauvorneen in her female family.
