Cortolvin

Cortolvin was bred in Ireland by Mr. Dunne. He ran second to Salamander in the 1866 Grand National for his owner, Lord Poulett, also owner of the great 'chaser The Lamb, who would win the race twice for him. Cortolvin was sold to the Duke of Hamilton, and went on to win the National the next year under an 11 st.-13 handicap, the highest weight carried to that time at Aintree. Cortolvin was by Chicken or Cheerful Horn, almost certainly the latter horse, a son of Harkaway and an Irish mare Victoria whose family went back several generations in Ireland. Cortolvin's second dam, Dairymaid, was by Kingfisher, a Birdcatcher son, and out of Michaelmas Daisy, by the Lottery son, Verulam; the latter sired Wanderer, a Grand National winner in 1855. Michaelmas Daisy was the dam of Revolver, who won steeplechases in Ireland, and sired a National winner in Gamecock (1887).
