Cogne

At the end of his flat racing career at the age of 3, when he was gelded, Cogne was a middle level, fair winner of a maiden at Milan at 2, and of a moderate race in Pisa at 3. He did not succeed in top company, placing 5th in the Premio Vergiate and the Premio Campobello at Milan when he was 2, and coming in 4th in the Premio Firenze at age 3. His pedigree was uninspiring; his maternal line, 5-i, was prominent in Scandinavia and was taken to Italy in 1938 with Carmenta, however only she, of Corsica, his grandam's, daughters, were bred, and Carmenta did not produce any fillies. His sire, Tommaso Guidi, and damsire, Fiorillo, both bred by Dormell-Olgiata Stud, showed plenty of stamina, but were not considered top class flat sires. Like his sire, Cogne was a plain, bony, stoutly shaped colt. When sent to jumping in the Scuderia Azzurra (Azzurra Stable) colors he proved top class, demonstrating jumping skill, stamina and strength. He won the Gran Premio Merano twice, and placed second in that race three times, including his debut in that race at age 5, and he ran fourth in it at age 16, his last race before a long-deserved retirement. Cogne also won the Grand Steeple-Chase of Milan twice, the Premio Giacomo Durini twice, the Premio Lainate, and other top steeplechases, and, over hurdles he won at Turin, Florence, and Merano (twice).
