Chuckatuck

Chuckatuck was a half-bred mare who ran in the Maryland Hunt Cup "...in the days when pace had begun to count for almost as much as jumping ability." She ran second twice in the Hunt Cup, in 1917 and 1918, showing "remarkable courage in a cold-blooded horse when one consideres the relatively fast pace," and finally won the race in 1919, the second mare to finish first in that event. She was a large mare, 16.2 hands, and was the mount for her owner, Benjamin Brewster, Jr., for nine seasons when he served as Master of the Green Spring Valley Hunt in Maryland. She also carried her owner's children in the field. In 1919 she was injured in the field, jumping wire, but recovered to continue in the hunt field until she was 18 years old, after which she was retired to the stud. She was by a thoroughbred called Sam Corey, from the imported Leamington sire line via the 17 hand stayer Longfellow. The only information regarding her dam is that she was "well-bred" and came from Virginia.
