The GSB surmised the Coppin mare was the grandaughter of the Coffin Mare, "...a mare so called by being concealed by Mr. Place in a cellar in Fenchurch Street, at the time of the Restoration."

*Corrected to reflect information from the Duke of Ancaster's Stud-book, Grimsthorpe, Lincolnshire. The Somerset mare, referred to only as a filly by Commoner in the GSB, was in the Duke's stud, as were her foals and their offspring; Prior suggests she was also bred at the stud, and that the Coppin mare was also in the stud there. The G.S.B., incorrectly lists the mare, Romp, with her dam (by Merlin), and grandam (by Pert) as progeny of the Coppin Mare family (Family 28), whereas the Ancaster stud-book shows her to be from the Oldfield Mare (Family 14). Since Family 14 was also developed at the Duke of Ancaster's Grimsthorpe stud, the confusion is perhaps understandable.Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse by C.M. Prior (London: The Sportsman Office, 1924).

**Corrected to reflect information from the Duke of Ancaster's Stud-book. Prior says this horse, Smiling Tom, who covered mares in the Ancaster stud in 1723, 1730, and 1731, should not be confused with (Gallant's) Smiling Tom, who was foaled at Hampton Court in 1724. Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse by C.M. Prior (London: The Sportsman Office, 1924).
